Case study

Between 2001 and 2005, SDL carried out the Beighton reclamation scheme, east of Sheffield, on a wholly derelict site that contained colliery waste, old tram and railway lines and a former tar plant.  The land had been acquired by the then Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward, for commercial development.  A reclamation scheme entailing a total site clean up operation and compaction of made ground to a recognised engineering specification was required before any commercial development could be implemented.

SDL offered to carry out the work basically for free, although certain additional works were funded out of a budget.  Sales of coal, coal slurry, ash, red shale and the import of inert fill using a sub-contractor who paid a royalty achieved a fit for purpose site neatly trimmed and tested ready for development, with stocks of 6F2 available for use in the development.
